Broadband access or in short broadband internet is a high speed internet connection data transmission by using either DSL or cable modem. These popular consumer broadband technologies are capable of transmitting data at 256 kilobits per second or more and are four times as fast as modems using typical digital telephone lines. Broadband internet usage in the US has increasing tremendously from 6 percent in June 2000 to more than 30 percent in 2003.

Now, consumer broadband internet implementations of up to 30 Mbits per second which are more faster and economical have substitute the ISDN and 56 kbits per second popularity. The prices charged depending on geographical locations spread over different countries. The issue for naming these fast connections as broadband internet is due to unusually high speeds of transmitting data and being able to send discrete amount of data simultaneously.

However, subscribers may still facing major problems with peer-to-peer file transfer, which requires high bandwidth. ISPs' (Internet Service Providers) network would be overloaded by subscribers using the internet concurrently thus consumers may not be getting the true broadband internet speeds as expected. Additional number of subscribers may be over loading the optimum level of connection, but this phenomenon is somehow temporarily occasion since most subscribers may not fully utilizing the connection capacity at all times.

DSL and cable modem are the normal technologies used for broadband internet in most areas. As the technology improves, namely the advent of twisted telephone lines and fiber optic connection, getting even higher performance for broadband internet is possible. One big challenge for broadband internet users is reaching people in less density of population such as on farms and ranches. The problem is similar to in the case of electricity that firstly introduce in cities only, later it had covered all populated areas.
